Ray
and Sherrill Anderson were both born and reared in
Montezuma, Iowa and graduated from High School there.
Ray attended Creighton University.
In 1973 Ray and
Sherrill moved to Union from West Branch, and Ray accepted the
position of manger of the Union-Whitten Savings Bank.
They joined the Community Church that year transferring their
membership from the Methodist Church.
They have three children, Steve, Ray, and Diane, and seven
grandchildren. All of
their children attended church and Sunday School and joined the
Union Community Church as teenagers.
Ray is a member of the Community Church Foundation Board of
Directors, and currently servers as the Foundation’s treasurer.
Ray and Sherrill appreciate the many benefits of belonging to
the Community church and living in a small rural community.
They very much enjoy the welcoming and friendly atmosphere at
the Community Church.

Patsy
and Bob Ashbaugh sometimes ride to church on their motorcyles.
Patsy is the daughter of LaVerne and Erma Haywood. She grew
up in the Community Church. |

In April of 1952, Floyd and Hilda
Aswegan moved from Grundy Center to the Kenneth Bourne farm
just east of Union. We have four daughters, Donna, Alice, Judy
and Jane. Donna and Fred Mitchem live in Marshalltown, Alice and
Dick Lyman live west of Tama, Judy and Doug Baganstos are in Waterloo,
and Jane and Ron Puls live in Melcom. We have twelve
grandchildren and twenty seven great grandchildren. While
living in Grundy Center, we helped build the American Lutheran Church.
I was a janitor there, Sunday School teacher, and a member of the
Choir and Missionary Society. It was hard to
leave there. After getting acquainted, we also like it here.
After living here about three years, we met Alvin and Gwen Adams and
were close friends until they went to their heavenly home. Gwen
got me started in the choir. I and our four girls all sang in
the choir until they all married and left. I quit singing when I
couldn't walk the steps anymore. |

Chris and Kara Backoff,
Logan and Brooklyn
We moved to the Union area in 2002 and
started attending the Union Community Church right away. Kara
grew up in Union and has always considered the Union Community
Church her home. Chris grew up in rural Iowa Falls. Kara
was baptized at the church as a child and became confirmed as a
teenager. Chris was also baptized at the Union Community
Church in 2000, and became a member in May of 2004. We
were married in the church December 9, 2000. We have
two beautiful children, Logan and Brooklyn. Logan loves to
attend Sunday School and visit with everyone after church.
Kara enjoys helping out with Sunday School as a sub, and for the
last two years has been in charge of the Sunday School Christmas
play. We are now living in the "old Tender Sprout Day
Care building" which we have remodeled into a home. We
enjoy spending time with extended family and friends. We feel
very lucky to have our church family.

Doc and Jo Bates
are both enjoying retirement. We
have time to learn more about our various hobbies and interests and
explore new ideas. Dr. Bates
practiced veterinary medicine in the Union area for over thirty years.
Jo was a librarian for many years. We joined the
Community Church of Union over fifty years ago.
We are grateful our children had the opportunity to grow up in
a caring, encouraging church family where they could learn religious
values and respect for others. We feel fortunate to
be able to listen to both Gary’s, and Joanne’s inspiring music and
we enjoy the choir. We
both look forward to listening to Rick’s thought provoking sermons.
Now that our Church Additions are completed, it is a joy
to realize what a beautiful, functional building it is.
We have appreciated the opportunity to work and laugh with
everyone in the congregation. They
are the congenial, happy, and dedicated people who have made the
Community Church such a growing, caring, compassionate church..
It’s delightful to spend a bit of time with our friends after
church. |

served our church. Mostly Preston and Gertrude Hendricks and
Jolly Moses, their big St. Bernard dog. Mamie also holds a
special place in our hearts. Al and I enjoy spending our free
