Bill Brown

William H. "Bill"
Brown
July 2, 1930 - August 14, 2005
William Henry Brown was born in Valentine, Nebraska, the son of William
James and Edene Sophia Olson Brown. He was reared and educated in Decatur, Nebraska, and served in the United States Marine Corps from
1947 to 1959. On March 30, 1949, he was united in marriage to Louella Mae Gatewood at Hawthorne, California. He served as
a police officer with the Denver Police Department for twenty-five
years, retiring in 1987. Following retirement, he and his wife
moved to Union, Iowa. He was a member of the South Hardin Kiwanis
Club, the Community Church, and enjoyed gardening, mechanical work and
woodworking. Bill is survived by his wife, Louella
Brown of Union, his three children Toni Mackeprang, Teresa Lounsberry,
and William David Brown, all of Lakewood, Colorado, four brothers and
four sisters, and three grandchildren, John Mackelprong, Keely Gohl and
Joey Brown. He was preceded in death by his parents and two
brothers.
Funeral Services were Thursday, August 18, 2005, 10:00 A.M. at the Union
Community Church, with Reverend Rick Schill officiating. Special
Music was provided by Organist Joanne Speas. Interment was at
Hillside Cemetery, Elliott, Iowa. After the service, Bill's family
and friends gathered at the church hall for a time of food and fellowship.
Bill was everyone's friend, encouraging us and inspiring us to do our
best. |

Jonathon B. Martin
In Loving Memory of
Jonathon
Martin
January 25, 1955 - July 4, 2005
Jonathon Martin was raised and educated in Union, and graduated
from Union-Whitten High School and Iowa State University with a
double major in Agriculture Business and Farm Operations. He
was married to Diane Jean Twit on November 12, 1977 at Holy Spirit Church
in Carroll, Iowa. Following their marriage, Jon and Diane made their
home in Decorah where Jon worked for the Federal Land Bank. In 1980
they returned to the Union area to farm and raise their family.
Jon valued community service and served a commissioner on the Marshal
County Soil Conservation Board and on the local school board from 1995 to
2001, presiding as president during his final year of service.
He was a member of the Community Church of Union. Jon was very
active in 4-H for many years. He had a passion for farming, but put
his faith and family in the forefront. He knew three seasons
planting, harvesting, and boating. He enjoyed his Lake of the Ozark
vacations with family and great friends and cherished them always.
Jon will be remembered as a partner, friend, provider, caring father and
an inspiration of strength to all those who knew him. Our love for
him will last eternally.
He is survived by his wife, Diane, of Union, his sons: Ryan, of Chicago,
Illinois, and Nathan of Union, Iowa, a daughter, Marissa, of Union;
his parents, Dale and Corinne Martin of Union; his brothers: Sid Martin
and his wife, Barb of New Castle, Indiana, and Edward Martin, and his
wife, Deborah, of Dixon, Illinois.
Funeral Services were Friday, July 8, 2005 at 10:30 a.m. at the Union
Community Church in Union, Iowa. Reverend Rick Schill
officiated. Pallbearers were Steve, Mullen, Kyle Mullen, Jason
Mullen, Greg Mullen, Dr. Jerry Twit, Don McKibben, Brian Martin, and
Andrew Martin. Gary Hauser was the Organist.
The vocalists were Sandy Haggerty, Jeannie Bonfig, Kathy Twit, and Kristy
Rittgers. Internment was in the Union Cemetery, Union |

LaVerne Haywood
In Loving Memory of
H. LaVerne Haywood
February 16, 1926 - June 27, 2005
H. LaVerne Haywood was born on February 16, 1926 in
Granger, Iowa, the son of Harry and Winnetta Herrold Haywood. At
the age of thirteen, he moved with his family to Union area where he
attended school On August 25, 1944 he enlisted in the United
States Army, serving overseas in the Rhineland Central Europe
Theater. He was honorably discharged on July 3, 1946 where he
received two bronze battle stars. On June 22, 1947, he was united
in marriage to Erma McDonald in Eldora, Iowa. He farmed his entire
life in the Union area, and was very active in his church and
community. LaVerne was a member of the Union Community
Church for sixty-six years, and served on the church board and many committees. He also served as a 4-H leader, on the Lawn Hill Coop
board, was a member of the Eldora American Legion for fifty-nine years,
and was on of the first to receive the Hardin County Conservation
Award. In his later years he volunteered at the Yuma Medical
Center while wintering in Arizona. He dearly loved his
grandchildren and his church.
LaVerne is survived by his wife: Erma Haywood of rural
Eldora, son: Harry (Carol) Haywood of Eldora: daughter: Pat (Bob)
Ashbaugh of Norwalk; son: Harris (Dianna) Haywood of rural Eldora;
eight grandchildren: Jennifer, Nathan, Brant, Blake, Cory, Heath,
Aaron and Jordon, and one great-grandchild: Lucinda; one sister; Corrine
(Dale) Martin of Union; three brothers; Charles (Betty) Haywood of
Union; Arvin (Carolyn) Haywood of Conrad; and George (Elaine) Haywood of
State Center. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister
Frieda Newby and a brother in infancy.
Funeral Services were Thursday, June 30, 2005, 10:00 A.M. at the Union
Community Church, with Reverend Rick Schill officiating. Brant
Haywood was Eulogist. Special
Music was provided by Organist Gary Hauser. Pallbearers were
Jennifer Cherry, Nathan Whitmire, Brant Haywood, Blake Haywood, Cory
Haywood, Heath Haywood, Aaron Haywood, and Jordon Haywood. Interment was at
the Union Cemetery, Union, Iowa. with Military Honors by Walter Sayer
Post #182 After the service, LaVerne's family
and friends gathered at the church hall for a time of food and fellowship.
LaVerne was a strong leader in the Union Community Church. He has
served on the Church Board and many church committees.
He encouraged and supported two major remodeling projects during the
many years he was a member of the Community Church. He was the
chairman of the committee that purchased new pews and other items for
the Sanctuary and was instrumental in obtaining the church bell. LaVerne was always optimistic and always
willing to do a bit more than his share. |

Herb Hauser
In Loving Memory of
Herbert H. Hauser
December 24, 1911 - February 14, 2005Herbert Howard Hauser
was born on December 24, 1911 in Whitten Iowa, the son of Lloyd L. and
Mary Mabie Hauser. He was reared and educated in the Whitten
area, graduating from the Whitten Consolidated Schools with the class of
1929. Herb was united in marriage to Agnes Johnson on July 23, 1937
in Roland, Iowa, to which union were born sons Gary and Steven. He
worked in his father's general store until beginning employment as a
mechanic at his uncle Howard Hauser's implement store in Whitten in 1933.
In 1959 he acquired the business, where he was owner/operator until 1978
when he sold the business to his son Gary, continuing to work there until
December of 2004.
From 1950 until 1992, Herb was a familiar figure at people's homes as he
serviced their TV's in the evenings. One of his fond memories was
shooting his age 78 at the Shalimar Golf Course. He served on the
school board of the Whitten Consolidated Schools and was active in
community service.
Herb is survived by his wife: Agnes Hauser of Union, two sons: Gary
(Annamaria) Hauser of Union and Steven Hauser of Iowa City, brother:
Laurence Hauser of Geneva, Illinois, two grandchildren, Sylvia Hauser of
Oak Park, Illinois and Lisa (Randy) Duncan of Indio, California, and two
great-grandchildren: Paden and Ella Duncan. He was preceded in death
by his parents, one brother and one sister.
Funeral services were Thursday, February 17, 2005, at 10:30 A.M. at the
Union Community Church with the Reverend Rick Schill officiating.
Special music was by Joanne Speas, organist and Gary Hauser, pianist.
Casket Bearers were Kevin Callaway, John Katzer, Jim Callaway, Al Bergman,
Joe Knight, and Dan Hauser. Honorary bearers were Dr. Lloyd Bates,
Roy Caster, Harold Vaux, Roy Diamond, Dwight Long, and Roger Hill.
Interment was at the Hauser Cemetery at Whitten, Iowa. Following the
committal services at the Hauser Cemetery, Herb's family and friends
gathered in the church fellowship hall for a time of food and fellowship. |
