Kenneth Newby

  August 11, 1947 - July 6, 2008

Ken Newby died unexpectedly while on a fishing trip to the northern boundary waters of Minnesota.     Ken was the son of Keith and Frieda Newby.  He grew up in the Union-Eldora area and graduated from Eldora High School in 1965.  He earned an associate arts degree at Marshalltown Community College.  He earned his bachelor of arts degree from Iowa State University and was currently working on his master's degree.  On June 6, 1970, he was united in marriage to Laura Lewis of Union.   The couple made their home in Union.   He was a past mayor of Union and a member of the Union Community Church and the Church Choir.   He was a member of Kiwanis and a leader for Hardin County 4-H.  Ken was an ambulance and fireman volunteer for the City of Union and enjoyed helping kids with their livestock at the Hardin County Fair.  In 1996, he was elected the Hardin County Fair Person of the Year.  Ken was a member of the South Hardin Recreation Area and the National Agnes Association.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking, golfing, auto racing, collecting antiques and auctions.  Most recently, he worked at Wilson Auction Company of Colo. 
He will be missed by his wife, Laura Newby, of Conrad, his son, Chris (Jennifer) Newby of Omaha, Neb, his daughter, Kara (Chris) Backoff of Union: two brothers, Kirby (Carol) Newby of Legman , Keene  (Lois) Newby of Laurel: seven grandchildren: Anna, Brendan and twins Carter and Dylan Newby, all of Omaha, and Logan, Brooklyn and Gavin Backoff, all of Union.  Funeral services were at the Union Community Church in Union with Pastor Rick Schill officiating.  Burial was at the Union Cemetery.   Following the committal service, Ken's family and friends gathered at the Church  Hall for a time of food and fellowship and remembrance.

Connie Bernard

February 15, 1956 - September 11, 2008

Connie Elaine Patterson was born February 15, 1956, the daughter of Clarence and Lula Jane (Vestal) Patterson.  She graduated from the Eldora High School's Class of 1974 and attended the Marshalltown Community College's School of Nursing, receiving her LPN Degree.  For many years, she worked at Eldora and Marshalltown in nursing and for the past nine years she was employed as a Veterinarian's Assistant in Union.  On April 2, 1977, she was united in marriage to Bernie Bernard in Union.  They have made Union their home all of their married lives.   Connie was active in the Union Community  and was a member of the Community Church.  She enjoyed camping at Guttenberg, cooking and baking. She liked animals, many times adopting them to her home.  She treasured her family-especially the grandkids.  Left to cherish her memory are her loving husband of 31 years, Bernie, her children: Nathan(Toni) of Union and their children Everett and Ian: Nydia (Richard) Teckenburg of New Providence and their children Briana, Skye and Shaylyn, her sisters and brother: Linda (John) Mormon of Perry, Patsy Tallman of Waukee and Clarence Patterson II (Connie) of Iowa Falls, mother-in-law Jeanne Bernard of Union, several nieces, nephew, and a host of friends.  Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. at the Union Community Church with Pastor Rick Schill officiating.  Private family interment rites were held later at the Union Cemetery.    Following the funeral service, Connie's family and friends gathered at the Church  Hall for a time of food and fellowship and remembrance.

Lyle Spurlin

                      In Loving Memory of

                            Lyle Spurlin

       November 13, 1929 - September 10, 2008 

Lyle was the son of  Harold C. Spurlin and Gladys Lamprecht   Spurlin.  He was raised in rural Whitten, graduating from Whitten High School in 1947.  Lyle joined the US Air Force, achieving the rank of Staff Sgt.  While in the service, he was married and his first son was born.  After his discharge in 1950, Lyle moved to Union.  He worked 5 years for Cooper Manufacturing and then worked for 30 years for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad, retiring  in 1994.  Lyle was the father of five children: Danny, Debbie, Mike, Connie and Steve.  Lyle was divorced from his wife in 1978.  In 1993 he was united in marriage to Ruth Gillam.
Lyle loved to work in his shop on lawn mowers, restoring  Farmall "H" tractors, and spending time with his loving wife in Guttenberg.                                                                                                                      Lyle entered into eternal life Wednesday, September 10, 2008 at Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center.  He will be missed by his wife, Ruth of Union, sons, Mike (Shelly) Spurlin and Steve (Paula) Spurlin, daughter, Connie (Brett) Hare, two stepchildren, Pam Smaha and Kevin Klock,16 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.  Lyle was preceded in death by his parents, brother Donald, sister Wanda, son Danny and daughter Debbie.  Funeral services were September 15, 2008 at 1:30 p.m. at the Union Community Church in Union with Pastor Rick Schill officiating.  Gary Hauser was the organist.  Pallbearers were Steve Simmons, Bob Vasey, Rick Good, Ron Sayer, Jim Goodlaxson, and Dave Tesar.   Burial was at the Hauser Cemetery.   Following the committal service, Lyle's family and friends gathered at the Church Fellowship Hall for a time of  food and fellowship and remembrance.

Lula Quaife

October 7, 1916 - March 22, 2009 
 

Lula was born on October 7, 1916 at home in Hubbard, IA and was the daughter of Herman Peter Hansen and Alwina A. K. (Mannetter) Hansen.

She was a long-time dedicated member of the Union Community Church, and she           taught the Adult Sunday School class until she was eighty-eight years old.

Lula attended country schools in and near Hubbard and graduated from Hubbard High School in 1934.

She was married to Ben Quaife on October 7, 1937 at her parent's home in Hubbard, IA. They were happily married for 53 years until his death in 1991.

She was a lifetime homemaker who held several odd jobs along the way. She loved her family - kids, grandkids, and great grandkids. She loved spending time with them and helping them any way she could. She loved to garden; especially flowers. She also enjoyed bird feeding, bird watching and camping with her husband thru the years

Lula passed away on Sunday, March 22, 2009 at Eldora Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

She is survived by two daughters Bonnie Nyce of Union and Sue (Jim) Downs of Colorado Springs, Colorado and a son Pete (Sue) Quaife of Marshalltown. She is also survived by eight grandchildren Debbie Scofield, Dianna Haywood, Deanna Vaux, David Downs, Greg Nyce, Kari Diggins, Kyle Quaife and Kelly Harms; and fifteen great grandchildren Brant, Blake and Cory Haywood, Katie Vaux, Brittany, Morgan and Mitchell Nyce, Gavin and Gage Scofield, Braden, Jordan and Kirstin Diggins, Grant, Jared and Bryce Harms. Her sister Norma Duncan of Hubbard also survives Lula.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a sister Vera Smith, a brother Albert Hansen and a son-in-law Buster Nyce.
  
Funeral services were at 10:30 a.m. at the Union Community Church in Union with Pastor Rick Schill officiating.  Lori Olender was the organist.  Burial was at the Hubbard Cemetery.   Following the committal service, Lula's family and friends gathered at the Church Fellowship Hall for a time of  food and fellowship and remembrance.
