The Community Church is the result of a merger
of three churches in Union,
the Congregational Church, the Methodist Church, and the
Christian Church.
In 1918, in an effort to reduce expenses, the three churches
formed a
federation and held services in the Christian Church.
Later, a number of the members of the Church of Christ decided to again establish their own
services. The Federated Church group, including some families from the
Church of Christ, and members of the Congregational Church and the Methodist Church
returned to the Congregational Church Building. In 1943, the Federated
Church
purchased the church building from the Congregational Christian Conference
and changed its name to the Community Church of Union.
Religious services were brought to Union in 1853 by Ethan Crippen, a Methodist Circuit Rider. Services were held in various
homes. The First Congregational Church of Union was organized in
1872. Rev. Kinzer was the first minister. By 1873 their first
church was built, a frame building costing $3000.00. A photo of this
first church is below. The Methodist Church was
built in 1876 and years later sold and torn down. The Christian
Church was built in 1877 and later remodeled. During 1905 and 1908
the cement
block building now used by the Community Church, was built for
$10,000 and was debt free at the time of its dedication at Easter, 1908.
