           August 9, 1941 - April 28, 2009

Kathryn Catherwood, 67, of Union, died Tuesday, April 28, 2009, at Valley View Nursing Home in Eldora. Funeral services were at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 2, 2009, at Union Community Church.  Burial was in Hauser Cemetery. Visitation was Friday evening from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Union Community Church. .

Kathryn Elizabeth McStockard was born on August 9, 1941, in Eldora, Iowa. She was the daughter of Harold McStockard Sr. and Luella Faye McStockard. She lived in the central Iowa area for most of her life, and she attended school in Eldora.

Kathryn worked at The Green Door as a cook, and then she worked at Dodger Manufacturing for many years before finding her true calling in the medical field. Kathryn was a loving and caring person who touched so many lives, as she worked as a dietary aide, CNA, and also as a medication aide. She worked at Valley View Nursing Home for many years, and then worked at Grandview Heights. She then worked at the Marshall County Care Facility until retirement. Kathryn was a bargain-hunter and loved garage sales and auctions. She enjoyed camping, fishing, and her family was most important. On April 14, 1981, Kathryn married Donald Catherwood in Eldora.

Kathryn left behind a very loving and devoted husband, Donald; their children, Debra Bell of Eldora, William(Jennifer) Talbott of Eldora, Donald Jr. of Union, Kristine(Dwight) Blomgren of Eldora, Tracy(Sally) Catherwood ofTama, Allan(Robin Mourlam) Kinney Jr. of Union, and Kimberly(Nick Wanken) Catherwood of Union; her sister Barbara Meiers and her family; her brother-in-law Vern Harris and his family; her many wonderful grandchildren, James(Lita) Bell, Kathryn(Richard Wilson); Donte, Sparkle(Michael Kokichi), Shawna(Don) Vokoun, Cody Stanley, Shyanne(Chris) Jones, Skyler(Marissa Hanson) Stocks, Cohin Kinney, Aaron Catherwood, Andrew Catherwood, Kandice Kinney, Ashley Kinney, Brock Kinney, Xavier Collins, Shanon Collins, Caitlin Egleston, Lane Stanley, and Imagin Wanken; her wonderful great-grandchildren, Simon, Joshua, Zoe, Darius, Dezel, Brillian, Ashlyn, Tiana, Keegan, Paiden, Kylin, Brayden, Kaiya, Takata, Damien, and Hayden; and many brothers, sisters, nieces, and nephews that she loved very much.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, and her grandson Kenneth McDane Bell.

The family would like to thank Brenda Nichols and all of the loving and caring staff at Valley View Nursing Home.

                 Arlene Hauser                                          
      December 9, 1914 to April 29, 2009

Arlene Hauser, age 94, of Union, passed away Wednesday, April 29, 2009 at the Iowa Veterans Home. Funeral services were at 11:00 am, Monday, May 4, at Union Community Church with Pastor Rick Schill officiating. Private family burial was in Marietta Cemetery in Albion.

Casket Bearers were Gary Vaux, Tim Nyce, Jeff Simms, Harris Haywood, Ryan Bailey, and Brant Haywood.   Honorary Bearers were Blake Haywood, John Schatzman III, Brant Haywood, Cory Haywood, Brad Schoer, and Doug Riley.  Carla Gunderson was the organist and Steven Haywood was the vocalist.

Arlene was born December 9, 1914 in Norway, Iowa, the daughter of Neil and Gladys (Syurrier) Riley. She was raised in the Hartland area, graduating from Albion High School in 1932. On March 23, 1935, she was united in marriage to Preston Nyce. On September 22, 1947, she was united in marriage to Wilmer Hauser in Sioux City. She lived in the Liscomb and Clemons areas, and was employed in the Clemons school food service for 18 years, retiring in 1976.   

Arlene spent her free time working on crafts and hand work, and enjoyed reading.  She valued her family most of all and loved spending time with them.

Arlene will be missed by her children, Kenneth (Darla) Nyce, Marlys Hauser, daughter in law, Bonnalyn Nyce, grandchildren, Dianna (Harris) Haywood, Deanna (Gary) Vaux, Greg Nyce, Tim (Cindy) Nyce, Tina Schatzman, Ryan (Mendy) Bailey, Cassidy (Jeff) Simms; great grandchildren, Brant, Blake and Cory Haywood, Katie Vaux, Brittany, Morgan and Mitchell Nyce, Jennifer Hoop,  John Schatzman III, Blair Bailey, JJ, Bruce, Holdan, and Sophie Simms.

Arlene was preceded in death by her husband Wilmer, son, Buster Nyce, and brothers, Everett and Melvin Riley.

Immediately following the service, Arlene’s friends and family gathered in the Church Fellowship Hall for a time of food and fellowship and remembrance.

George Hammer

                  George V. Hammer

          August 8, 1918 to October 15, 2009


George Hammer died Thursday, October 15. 2009.  Funeral services for George Hammer were Monday, October 19, 2009 at the Union Community Church with Pastor Lloyd McDonald officiating.  Gary Hauser was the organist, and Steve Haywood the soloist.  Pallbearers were Scott Hammer, Chris Hammer, Brock Morlan, Matt Hamilton, Connor Hamilton and Miles Hamilton.  Honorary Pallbearers were Dr. Lloyd Bates, Paul Williams, Max Graves, Asa (Bo) Hammer, and Dick Perrin.   Visitation was from 5:00 to  7:00  pm on Sunday evening at the Community Church.

George Hammer was born on August 8, 1918 on a farm near Union.  He was the son of Vernon George and Ruby Walton Hammer.  George graduated from Union High School and then served in the United States Army.  He was stationed in Massachusetts and Oregon doing carpentry work.  On October 5, 1940, George married Ethel Ellis in Marshalltown.  They were married for 62 years.   George built 117 homes and remodeled countless other homes.  He was formerly the mayor of Union.  He was a member of the Hardin County Conservation Board, the American Legion, and the Union Community Church.  He sang in the church choir for many years.  George enjoyed camping and fishing.
After retirement, he worked as a building inspector in Apache Junction, Arizona.    George and Ethel enjoyed square dancing and golfing.   George will be missed by his children, Floyd (Kathy Hamilton) Hammer of Union, and Patty Hammer of Union: his grandchildren, Scott (Chandra) Hammer, Chris Hammer, and Ginger Hammer: and his great-grandchildren, Brock, Maggie, and Sebastian: and his brother, Bo (Doris) Hammer of Sebring, Florida and by his many friends.

In death, he has rejoined his parents: his wife, Ethel Hammer: his brother, Howard Hammer: his sister, Margaret Hammer, who died in infancy: and his favorite dog in the world, Gus, a Scottish terrier.

George Hammer was buried in the Union Cemetery.

After the funeral services, George's family and friends gathered in the Church Fellowship Hall for a time of food and fellowship and remembrance.
