Joe and Barb Knight
Joe
and Barb have enjoyed the Community Church since 1960.
Our children, Lori, Cynthia, and J.D. grew up knowing people
of all ages who gathered in Christian fellowship. The
church has enriched all our lives with the music, inspired
messages, caring people and most of all the presence of the
Holy Spirit when two or three are gathered in His Name. |

Dale and Shirley Landt
Dale
and Shirley Landt were married Oct. 20, 1950 and have been
members of the Union Community Church for over 50 years. Dale
was baptized a Lutheran and Shirley was raised a
Baptist. Their three sons Rick, Steve and Todd were all
baptized in the Church and were active there in their youth.
Shirley remembers teaching in the Primary Department when Irma
Haywood, and Ardis Casters were teaching and Mamie B. was S.S.Supt. . Mamie was an awesome lady. It was obvious that
she really loved and enjoyed the little children. She had
such a good way with them and could always get them involved
either before or after playing songs.
It seemed as if Mamie's fingers just floated up
and down the keyboard like gliding on ice any time she played
the piano or the organ. When Shirley taught in the
Junior Dept. Cordon Clemons and Denzil Shaver were also
teachers and always on hand to help in any way possible. Later
on Shirley enjoyed Jo
Bates’ Adult
Class. During the lesson one Sunday, Jo made a
comment that left a lasting impression on Shirley.
Jo has quietly accomplished a lot in the workings of the
church. In 1975 when Shirley was teaching the High
School Class, FEELING IT WAS VERY IMPORTANT FOR THE YOUTH TO
NEVER LAUGH OR MAKE FUN OF ANY ONE THAT HAD PROBLEMS, she had
all the students walk around in the church as if they were
blind or unable to get around very easy.
It was a challenge for various individuals in the
congregation to do so. Some of which were senior citizens
that Shirley respected. Some young people had been
temporarily injured in accidents. When he was in his
early 20's, David Rowen had been in a snowmobile
accident.
2-1975 and in the wink of an eye he became a
paraplegic and his life had been changed forever.
Ironically one-week after the lesson on Caring, as the result
of a freak farm accident (April 5,1975) Dale became a
quadriplegic. He spent the next 9 months in the hospital
in Des Moines. Dale and Shirley's lives were also drastically
changed with many choices and challenges. Preston
Hindricks was pastor at that time. Shirley requested that he
bring one of the hymn books along to the hospital. The
music in the Church is very important to her. There can be so
much comfort and meaning in the words of a song. Shirley
feels the Community Church is blessed to have had, and to
continue to have, such awesome musical talent. She
loves to sit where she can watch Gary’s hands and feet as he
plays the organ. It
appears that he has happy feet that are always on the
move. Gary Hauser and Joanne Speas are Fantastic either
at the organ or the piano. Shirley said "I would not
attempt to name all of the individuals that I have appreciated
sharing their talents."
Dale and Shirley continue to make their home on the farm south
of Union where Dale has lived since 1936. When the
weather is right, some days he travels 20 to 25 miles along
the country roads in his Wheel chair savoring the beauty of
the earth and its inhabitants. Faith, and life of
family friends and prayers are What makes each
day! Prior to the accident, Shirley was involved
in various activities and organizations in the
community. She was a reporter for two newspapers
and was a part time CNA at Mac West Hospital in Marshalltown.
Dale died March 26, 2007. Please
